Game Of The Week
This week’s game comes from the Tuesday night ladder matches. Bill Whinemiller and I have been coming to the Colorado Springs Chess Club for years but have never played each other…until now.
Bill was a little off his game this night and making all kinds of mistakes. First, he decided to keep score in a G15 time control. He looked at me without any score sheet and said, “Aren’t you going to keep score?”
Since Bill usually just plays pick-up games at the club, he was unaware of how fast 15 minutes dwindle. After falling behind by 10 minutes, he stopped recording at move 25 and didn’t record another move in the rest of his 5 games.
Also, he left this game at the table, and I quickly grabbed it for the website.
His second big mistake was singing “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” to me. It is not because he has a bad voice (it’s lovely), but rather his mistake was by trying to make fun of Linda Rondstadt, who got kicked out of a concert.
You see, he picked the wrong artist. Just like he shouldn’t have picked the bishop to sacrifice on move 21, he shouldn’t have picked a Crystal Gayle song.
