Bad Habits

Game Of The Week

This week's game comes from the Colorado Springs Chess Club's Sunday Night Chess. It was played by the top 2 seeds in the event, Brian Rountree and Jose Llacza. They both have Rapid ratings over 1900. How they got their rapid ratings so high is beyond me.

I am languishing in the class B range with my online, Rapid rating. Of course, I have developed some bad habits with my chess-study during the pandemic. Mostly, I haven't done anything. I have had a hard time motivating myself to go over games or look at any tactic problems. The only thing I do chess-wise is to play Blitz on my phone when I eat lunch.

It is no wonder I had no clue what was going on in Brian and Jose's game. Whatever chess-habits Jose has created during the pandemic is working for him. The computer scored his moves with 98.9% accuracy and only one mistake.

The funny thing is that the computer will also break down the accuracy score by piece. The computer was very complimentary for the most part, scoring five pieces with 99% accuracy. However, it was brutal on his Queen score: 12%!!!

According to the computer, the one mistake in his game was a Queen move: 18. Bb5 Qd5?

Even if it wasn't the best move, I didn't get why it was a mistake since the computer could have scored it with excellent, good, or inaccurate before calling it a mistake.  It seemed to work out pretty well for him.  I guess I will leave it to the chess-players with good study habits and just go get myself a taco and play some Blitz.
