Game Of The Year XVII

One Of These Nights

Over-the-board chess may be coming back!  It has been over a year since the pandemic darkened the doorsteps of the Colorado Springs Chess Club.  Now, a glimmer of light is shinning on the horizon.

People are traveling again, restaurants are at 100% capacity, and live events are happening.

In fact, Mark McGough, the Treasurer of the Colorado Springs Chess Club, bought a table for 4 chess players to see The Long Run, an Eagles tribute band, at Stargazers Theatre in April.

The Fab Four Of Colorado Springs Chess

It had been a year since I had seen Dean Brown.  He asked me, "When is the club going to open again?"

I just said, "One of these nights."

It was even longer since I had seen Sam Bridle.  He asked me, "When is the club going to open again?"

I just said, "One of these nights."

Finally, I turned to Mark, who I had put in charge of contacting the Housing Authority about when they expected to open the Acacia Apartments, and asked him, "When is the club going to open again?"

He just said:

One of these nights
One of these crazy old nights
We're gonna find out pretty mama
What turns on your lights

Well, we decided not to wait for the Acacia Apartments to open up.  The COATI Uprise was willing to let chess players hold an event at their place.

So, the Colorado Springs Chess Club will try out our first over-the-board event in over a year this Wednesday!

Game Of The Year

The Game Of The Year was a tough choice this past year.  I usually go over a lot of chess games from the club each week as I manually enter them into my TD database.  Since covid scuttled over-the-board chess, we moved the club online.  The online version records all the games automatically.  So, I have less work to do, but I also have less incentive to look at the games.  Therefore, I have less games to choose from for the Game Of The Year.

There has to be something special about the game to get me to look at it online.  Sometimes I might go over my previous game in between rounds as I wait for Jeff Fox to finish his 100 move drawn endgame.  Sometimes I might go over other players' games when I see the computer analysis spike and I miss the tactic.  Sometimes it just might be a milestone for me.

This one was a milestone in two ways.

One, I finally won with 1...h6.  I had been doing my version of LM Brian Wall's 40 Move Challenge and was stuck on h6, losing 3 times:

LossesOpponent
H6Highlybunspect
jfoxhoot
Termenoil

Thankfully, I got paired with Mark McGough with black.  Mark is my most common opponent over-the-board.

My OpponentWinLossRating GainAve Rating
MCGOUGH, MARK85.020.076.01772

I have beaten him so often that I call him my whipping boy.  Although, I have learned not to say that to him, as that is when he gets motivated and goes on a winning streak against me.

In the online club, I am doing even better against Mark (+16-1=1) with a 88.9% winning percentage versus the 81.0% winning percentage over-the-board.

Of course, it was a tough game, as Mark never lets me win easily.  This time, he threw away a win and missed a clever drawing opportunity.

Black to move

Two, I finally got to use the Lucena Position.  I had first heard about it from Larry Wutt at the Colorado Springs Chess Club when we were meeting in the cafeteria of the Acacia Apartments.  However, I don't think I have ever used it in an over-the-board game.  Now, I had to remember it with little time on my clock in a rapid game.  I just knew the Rook goes to the 4th rank to build the bridge, which I did on move 75.  The funny thing is that Mark already had the Lucena Position on move 53, if it counts with the extra pawns on the board, and didn't play it, creating the first...

Double Lucena

Game Of The Year XVI

Start Of The Season

Sunday, April 12, 2020

The times are changing.  Historically, I put out my Game Of The Year at the end of my chess publishing season some time in August.  For 2019, I did not get it done.  I have been spending the off-season looking for some excuse why I did not publishing the 16th version of the Game Of The Year.

Then Coronavirus hit!  The Colorado Springs Chess Club was closed; businesses went dark; the streets became desolate, and toilet paper can only be purchased on the dark web.  Now, I had the perfect justification for my lack of chess writing.

However, the more I thought about it; the more I realized how essential chess is to the victory over this dreaded plague.  Clearly, chess is the greatest tool for social distancing since the invention of body odor.

I have been social distancing ever since I downloaded a chess app to my phone.  I convinced myself that moving from sleeping in bed to playing chess on the couch meant I was up and being productive since, technically, I am a chess professional and any practice counts as work.  In addition, my favorite aspect of chess club is the fact that I can escape any boring social interaction with three simple words, "My opponent moved."

Unfortunately, the stay-at-home order has been extended.  Not enough people are practicing safe space.  Well, I have decided to do my part.  My plan is to resurrect the Colorado Springs Chess Club and convert more people into social distancing masters by offering online tournaments for the club.

The Colorado Springs Chess Club will try out our first online event this Sunday, April 12th at 8 pm.  You just need a free chess.com account and join the Colorado Springs Chess Club.

Stay home and play chess!

Game Of The Year

The Game Of The Year comes from a Quick-rated game given to me by LM Gunnar Andersen.  He won the 2020 Colorado Springs City Speed Chess Championship in January and became the 11th champion.  Unfortunately, the speed games are not recorded.  So, I picked the next best thing.

However, I also wanted to tell you about my best victory from last year.  It came from my encounter with the auto insurance company Progressive.  If you are just interested in the chess, then feel free to skip over my rant.

[Begin Rant]

Filing an insurance claim can be like a chess game.  You will need a lot of patience; it helps to look at all the legal moves you have and be familiar with the tactics your opponent will employ.  After all, your opponent will use all the time allowed and still not resign no matter how bad their position is.

When I was finally finished with my ordeal with Progressive, I thought I should share my experience with others.  I had spent a lot of time researching how I could beat them and wanted to record some of the things I learned just in case someone may need advice in the future.  However, coming up with a title for the blog was difficult.  I wasn't sure how much emotion to convey.

  • How To Sue An Insurance Company In Small Claims Court
  • How To Win $2,914.57
  • I Still Hate Progressive
  • Flo Blows

Finally, I just decided to make it my Game Of The Year.  After all, it was my best win of 2019 and a better payday than any chess tournament I have won.

Before I get into the details, here are the main lessons I learned:

  • Get off the phone
  • Get to court
  • Get 3 estimates

"The accident was simple," I thought.  Someone backed into my parked car on November 9, 2018.  I was not even in the vehicle at the time.  He apologized and gave me his insurance information.

I had a similar accident 10 years earlier.  I made one call to State Farm.  They said, "We are sorry, pick a repair place, and we can help with the rental."  I never had to speak to them again, and my car was restored to its previous glory.

With Progressive, the tactics started on the first call.  They will push you to use their repair place and get you in before they have to mail out the state required notice that you have a legal right to choose your own repair company in Colorado.

Then the lies will come.

The repair place I chose said, "We can submit the estimate.  Who is the insurance company?"  When I told them it was Progressive, they groaned.  But they had worked with Progressive before and emailed the company and myself the estimate within one day.  But, I heard nothing.

When I called, Progressive said, "We never got the estimate."  Now, I realized this was going to be a fight and got off the phone.  I figured it would be better to have a record of what they were saying if I needed to prove it in court.  So, I resent the estimate to them.  I had to sent it close to six times before they acknowledged it.  By this time I had filed a complaint with the Department of Insurance.

The Department of Insurance doesn't really do anything.  However, the insurance company can face a fine if they do not respond to the complaint within a certain period of time, and it does get other people involved with your case.

Finally, after months of stalling, they made an offer based on the original estimate.  They offered $1,451.63 after I emailed them that I was going to take this to small claims court.  Their low-ball offer was about $1,000 lower than the estimate.  They even lied (in writing this time) saying, "I have issued payment for the damage."  The check never arrived, and I would not have accepted it anyway.  I felt I had enough ammo for court.

It took 4 months of calls and emails for nothing.  When I threatened to sue, I got an offer.  After I filed the case, they were willing to settle.

One of the concerns I had was how to get Progressive and not the insured.  But you have to sue the insured in small claims court, and the insurance company will provide an attorney and pay the judgement.  I kept the insured informed about how I was being treated and the suit.  He was not happy, but he was willing to call Progressive and push them to settle.

I had one more chance to remove Progressive out of the loop and get my money when Judge Mathis contacted us.  I was willing to drop the small claims case and get a free trip to Chicago to be on TV, but, unfortunately, the defendant has to agree.

See image on blog

My preparation for trial was to watch A Few Good Men and Pawn Stars.  You can have representation in small claims if the defendant has an attorney, but I couldn't find an attorney willing to take my case pro bono.  So, I was just going to use what I learned about negotiation from Pawn Stars to settle before the trial.

I had filed the case for $6,890.01 by throwing in lost wages, interest, and punitive damages.  The limit for small claims cases in Colorado is $7,500.  I figured that would scare them and give me plenty of room to negotiate.  I don't think it worked.  Progressive has probably been sued a lot and knows what they are likely to lose.

The Progressive attorney contacted me the day before the trial with a revised offer.  It wasn't much higher.  So, we went to court.  The judge gives you one more chance to settle before starting trial.  I decided $3,000 was my bottom line, but Progressive wouldn't go any higher than $2,200.  I was still so mad at them that it was worth the risk to have the judge decide.

The verdict was $2,914.57.  I was pretty close and may have been right on the money except that I only got 2 estimates for the damage and the judge used the low, Progressive estimate as the third to make an average.

While things went well for me, I realized going to court is a risk.  The court can be backed up and have a back-log of cases.  Sometimes the wheels of justice grind slow.  The judges can pretty much do whatever they want.  Sometimes you get a just judge, sometimes not.

Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

Matthew 5:25 (KJV)

[End Rant]

And now, back to an actual chess game.

LM Gunnar Andersen got the Game Of The Year thanks to good timing and an old policy I created to punish one of my chess villains.  I am the Dark Knight of Colorado Springs chess.  When the bat-signal shines bright on Tuesday night, I must swoop in and prevent any crime.

Years ago, the Penguin🐧tormented the citizens of Colorado Springs.  I banished him to Arkham asylum and offered any citizen the right to have their victory over Penguin moved to the top of the publish list.  The citizens rejoiced with the return of safety and sportsmanship.

However, the peace was short-lived when the Riddler︖ tried to wreak havoc.  The ingenious use of the bat-camera scared the Riddler︖ into hiding.  Tranquility returned to the club until the Joker's🃏cackling laughter sent shivers up the spines of everyone in the tournament hall.  Again, the Dark Knight was able to restore order.

One at a time, the villains were little match for the Caped Crusader.  Unfortunately, there has been a jailbreak and the inmates have escaped: the Penguin🐧, the Riddler︖, and the Joker🃏 are on the loose!

With LM Gunnar Andersen's new Speed crown and his ability to win chess games at lightning speed, I chose one of his quick wins as the Game Of The Year.  I call it:

The Flash🗲 vs The Penguin🐧

Game Of The Year XV

End Of The Season

Thursday, September 20, 2018

Well, another chess season has come to a close for me.  It is time for me to move on to managing the website for my other hobby (https://spamfootball.blogspot.com/), but I will return after the football season ends.  Before I go, I wanted to clean up some loose ends.

Of course, you can still send in news items or articles during the off-season, and I will email them along to the subscribers.  Any games I receive will be stored at the Colorado Springs Chess News’ Yahoo! group.  You can also join the group to keep receiving chess games all year round.

So, before I finish typing my chess thoughts for another year, I want to thank all the people who sent in games and articles, all the people who took the time to tell me something nice about the newsletter, and all the people who take the time to read this.

Game Of The Year

Usually at this time, I look over the past year's statistics to see if it was a good or bad year for me.  Looking over the statistics helps me get past the bad feelings that linger from my losses.  They bring me back into balance and force me to look at what I did right and what I did wrong.  While the past couple of years have been off and 2018 isn't looking much better, I still have time to improve 2018.  Here is how it is going so far:

  • 2045 peak USCF rating (record: 2015 - 2102)
  • 2067 peak BLITZ rating (record: 2017 - 2067)
  • 2055 peak CLUB rating (record: 2013 - 2127)
  • 77.08% USCF winning percentage (record: 2012 - 79.31%)
  • 79.07% CLUB winning percentage (record: 2013 - 87.86%)
  • 12 projected prizes won (record: 2014 - 20)
  • 25 projected USCF-rated wins (record: 2013 - 75.5)
  • 0 upsets (record: 2001 - 6)

So, what happened in 2015 when my rating started to tumble back down from my peak?

I started directing tournaments for the Colorado Springs Chess Club in 2015.  It is not easy to direct and play well.  I still haven't figured out how to find the balance between focusing on my game and taking care of the event duties.

However, directing hasn't been all bad.

Directing tournaments for the Colorado Springs Chess Club is a nice way to give back to the club I have enjoyed for 20 years.  My largest pay day for chess was while I was a tournament director.  I get a lot of material for my newsletter.  And every once in a while, I get to see a game that just makes my year.

Larry Osborn provided me with the most enjoyable game of the year.  Since I play and direct, I didn't get any time to watch his game.  However, my Vice President, Peter Barlay saw the ending and told me, "You are going to love this!"  I went over the score sheet at IHOB, as I was uploading the ratings report to USCF at 2:00 am in the morning.

I burst into laugher when I saw 14. Qh5+!!!

It was not because of the blunder.  It was because I knew Larry had won.  It was not just an upset of a higher rated player.  It was a comeback against a higher rated player after hanging his Queen!

It was the chess equivalent of a hail mary pass.  Instead of the "Minnesota Miracle," it was the Colorado Springs Miracle!

I go over hundreds of games each year just hoping to find a game like this so that I can send LM Brian Wall a legitimate contender for the Jim Burden Award rather than my crappy, blitz blunders (https://cschessnews.blogspot.com/2010/06/for-such-time-as-this.html).

Here is my nomination for the 2018 Jim Burden Award.

Total: 15 positive years and 4 negative years

So, as far as my favorite game of the year goes, the obvious choice would be the one upset I had this year.  I was able to get a win from NM Josh Bloomer during the "Year of Josh."

Josh has been playing less and less chess recently.  In fact, for 5 straight years he played less than 20 games.  Finally, several of Colorado's masters got together for a bet to see which 2200 could pass 2300 first.  This goal seemed to reinvigorate Josh's game.

At the beginning of this year, Josh was getting close to winning the bet.  He was at 2294 and only six points away from the top of the mountain.  However, that is when I got my upset.  He is the highest rated player I have beaten.  It was a setback for Josh but only temporarily.

In the past year, Josh has not only passed the 2300 barrier but also only lost this game and one more to fellow NM, Chris Peterson, in the process.  Chris was one of the masters in 2300 bet and took Josh out for his steak dinner.  But the real thanks goes to LM Brian Wall, who served up the steak dinner on a silver platter.

Game Of The Year XIII

End Of The Season

Wednesday, September 7, 2016

While 2015 sets some records, this year looks to be an off year:

  • 2053 peak USCF rating (record: 2015 - 2102)
  • 2055 peak BLITZ rating (record: 2015 - 2055)
  • 2054 peak CLUB rating (record: 2013 - 2127)
  • 71.43% USCF winning percentage (record: 2012 - 79.31%)
  • 74.14% CLUB winning percentage (record: 2013 - 87.86%)
  • 18 projected prizes won (record: 2014 - 20)
  • 23 projected USCF-rated wins (record: 2013 - 75.5)
  • 1 upset (record: 2001 - 6)

However, I found a new report on the USCF website that can quickly give you an idea of how the year went.  The nice thing is that I still have to the end of the year to make this a positive year.

Year, Peak Rating, Gain

1998 1680 +
1999 1580 -
2000 1567 -
2001 1695 +
2002 1757 +
2003 1772 +
2004 1805 +
2005 1864 +
2006 1882 +
2007 1897 +
2008 1962 +
2009 2003 +
2010 1977 -
2011 2000 +
2012 2043 +
2013 2058 +
2014 2098 +
2015 2102 +
2016 2053 ?

Total: 15 positive years and 3 negative years

So, as far as my favorite game of the year goes, the obvious choice would be the one upset I had this year.  The problem is that I have already published that game when I was trying to help promote the chess movie:  The Dark Horse (https://cschessnews.blogspot.com/2016/03/the-dark-horse.html).  It was supposed to be re-released in some select cities this year.

However, the movie was like my chess upsets; never to be seen again.

Without any other good wins from which to choose, I decided it was time to pick a draw for the Game Of The Year.  This will be the first time I have chosen one of my draws for the game of the year.  However, it was not without excitement, as I missed my best shot at a win.

See diagram on blog

I was playing Alex Bozhenov on board one at the Colorado Springs Chess Club's monthly event.  I thought he played well and felt that I had messed up the ending when he caught me by surprise getting a Passed Pawn on move 42.  I tried not to panic and use my time advantage to solve the problem he had given me.

I thought I had figured out a way to salvage a draw.  He was very low in time and had a naked King.  So, I am sure he was happy with a draw.  I, however, was not convinced I had given up the victory, but I was very nervous that I would push for a win and blunder the draw.  I have done this before.  Typically, this happens when I use up my time advantage and fall below my opponent on the clock.

I decided to keep pressing for the win despite falling behind in time and allowing his Pawn to get one square away from Promotion because I had a 30 second increment.  My clock would get under 1 minute, but I would make a move and jump back over a minute.  It was giving me a false sense of security.  I thought I could go on like this forever.

I gained a 2 Pawn Advantage and thought I had to have a win somehow.  But I tried to remind myself to hold the draw.  I found myself in the position below with seconds clicking off the clock.

I was tortured by being up 2 Pawns.  I had always thought somebody said, "Two Paws are winning." How could I offer a draw?

Finally, I decided this position was above my pay grade.  I was going to have to leave it in the hands of the long-drawn-out-endgame masters, DuWayne Langseth and LM Brian Wall.

I wasn't going to figure this out with just 30 seconds to think or by making random moves.  So, I tried to remember the rules about making a draw offer.  In my case, it was a little more difficult because I have to take off my headphones and my opponent doesn't speak English.

After offering the draw, I almost forgot to hit my clock.  When I finally pressed the button, I realized I was at 1 second.

Game Of The Year XII

End Of The Season

Saturday, August 22, 2015

Game Of The Year

Usually at this time, I look over the past year's statistics to see if it was a good or bad year for me.  Looking over the statistics helps me get past the bad feelings that linger from my losses.  They bring me back into balance and force me to look at what I did right and what I did wrong.  While 2014 was a record-setting year for me, this year actually broke several of those marks:

  • Same number of upsets as last year (2)
  • 2099 peak USCF rating (record: 2014 - 2098)
  • 2055 peak BLITZ rating (record: 2014 - 2039)
  • 2107 peak CLUB rating (record: 2013 - 2127)
  • 20 projected prizes won (record: 2014 - 20)
  • 83.33% CLUB winning percentage (record: 2013 - 87.86%)
  • 87.50% USCF winning percentage (record: 2012 - 79.31%)
  • 42 projected USCF-rated wins (record: 2013 - 75.5)

In addition to the statistics, I authored another article for the Colorado Chess Informant:

The Rook (https://cschessnews.blogspot.com/2015/02/the-rook.html)

However, the biggest change this year was that I became a certified USCF tournament director.  It was a bit of an adjustment from my usual routine as just a player, but after 10 club events, I feel like I have grown accustomed to the new role.  So, I wanted to thank all the players who put up with me as a new TD.

As far as choosing my favorite game of the year, it was a little tough.  My two upsets came from a new event:  The IHOP Quick.  Typically, I used to play quick-rated games only at the club.  Therefore, they seemed more like club games than rated games, and I didn't track my upsets from club events that were less than 30 minutes (G30).

However, the way I entered quick events that occurred on non-club nights in my database had these upsets showing up on my list.  So, I thought I would leave them on the upset list.

Now, I had to overcome another problem.  I don't record quick-rated games.  How was I going to publish games with no record?

Well, it turns out that I don't need a score sheet to replay a game, as long as I get back to it quickly.  Especially when I get an upset, the game is memorable enough that I can recall all the moves.  So, I entered my two upsets into my games database in case I didn't get anything better.  And I didn't.

I chose my upset over NM Josh Bloomer as the game of the year because it was more exciting than my upset over NM Gunnar Andersen.  I felt like I had messed up the opening against Josh and had to do something daring to have a shot.

I played quickly and aggressively, throwing away pieces and going after his King without much analysis.  He took his time and thwarted my attack.  Once I realized that I was not going to get his King, I switched my plan to getting back my material.  I was pleasantly surprised to see I wasn't too bad off.

I felt my best option was to stay ahead in time and just keep fighting for a draw.  I was willing to trade off his Rooks to reduce his activity, but I decided to keep the Queens on for perpetual check threats.  It turned out to be the right choice.

When we reached this position, I had a substantial lead in time.  I was just trying to stop his Pawn on c2.
