Game Of The Week
This week’s game comes from the simultaneous exhibition given by National Master Josh Bloomer. Josh was nice enough to allow all the participants their choice of color.
I was sitting next to Virgil McGuire and told him he could be whatever color he wanted. Immediately, he flipped his board around and took white. I also took white, but it didn’t help me as much as it did Virgil. In fact, only three people selected black, and they all lost.
One of the daring few fellows to fearlessly follow the footsteps down the path less traveled was Philip Meyer. I remember his brother, Sam Meyer, but I had never met Philip until tonight when I asked him if I could use his game.
Philip appears to be on the rise, as he has just started playing at the club, but his rating has almost climbed up to the level of his big brother, who I played at the club back in 2000. Unfortunately, this evening Philip was facing a master with the white side of the Ruy Lopez and a queen sac, mating combo as his weapon.

my response to your Ren Fen email turned into a giant one of my own - as far as your unbeaten streaks it's obvious doing the newsletters is making you a stronger player - in order to teach Chess I have to stay sharp and learn a lot too so my students help me indirectly and directly. The secret to improving is an open mind - the huge edge of kids is just trusting and not getting too upset over failure.

The recent Anderson versus Johnston game was very interesting and dynamic! Seems to me Black had the opportunity to play Bxh1, getting the White rook, but let it slip by. After White plays his 12.Ne2 attacking the enemy Black Queen on f4, this rook capture possibility disappears for good. Do you agree?
[It looks like 7 ...Bg7 is the better play for black making it easier to take the rook. Even then the attack on the black king is strong as black only won 13 out of 51 games in chessbase. Here is the only black win before 1990:]

Paul (is that your name). Great newsletter. Thanks for the inspirational piece on Dean Brown. By the time I got the part about his precipitous drop from the rarefied atmosphere around 1542 to the 1300s, I was rolling on the floor. Then I realized with a shock that my own rating has dropped about the same amount from my own halcyon days. This insight gave me new appreciation for Dean's heroic efforts against ringers, foreigners, kids under 12 and the other pretenders that make life so difficult for us--I mean, of course, for the true affictionados like myself.
