Game Of The Week
This week’s game comes from Dean Brown. Dean is probably the most active chess player in Colorado Springs (based on USCF-rated games). I looked at his member details from the USCF’s member services area and found that he has played in 241 events since 1991 and 240 since 1996. That works out to 2.5 USCF-rated events per month! I don’t think that is the record for Colorado, but I do think it is the best in the Springs.
And how has all that experience helped his ratings? In 1996, Dean was 1542. Now, he is 1388. That works out to -1.6 rating points per month.
What is the reason for Dean’s ratings drop? Well, some have suggested it is the years. But others are quick to point out it is not the years but the mileage.
The reason may be a mystery, but I do know that it is not my fault as he has taken 24 rating points from me in all of our games. I have learned that he can be deadly, especially in the first round of a tournament. Here is an example of his 1st round prowess. Facing an expert in a sudden death time control, Dean falls behind in time, misses the winning move, and ends up losing an even position on time.

This Week In Chess
Tuesday May 25, 2004
On 5/18, the CSCC had 26 members show up for the night’s activities. Andy Chow and Allan Ufer played an USCF-rated game (G90) with Andy gaining the victory. Most of the members listened to Life Master Brian Wall give a stern lecture about how all the chess rules we were taught are totally useless or something along those lines. I wasn’t able to follow most of it as I was stewing about my games being used as an example of what not to do. For some reason, Virgil McGuire was able to find both key elements of the 1st thematic opening against me. I tend to hold to the Cordovano Chess Theory that I lost because he got lucky. In any case, Brian also showed us several examples from the book, Chess Strategy In Action, to back up his point. Brian is mentioned in the book on page 65. I checked and saw Brian’s reference but was unable to find any mention of me.
Territory Days
This Tuesday (5/25), the CSCC will have a sign up sheet for its chess booth at the Territory Days. The booth will be located in Bancroft Park (Colorado & 24th) and will allow visitors to play against members for free. Members are needed to man the booth from 10am-1pm, 1-4pm, or 4-7pm on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday. If you can help out and cannot sign up Tuesday, contact CSCC officer Buck Buchanan at buckpeace@pcisys.net. You can have fun, dress western, and possibly view the much-rumored-about club banner.
