Game Of The Week

This week’s game comes from Chessbase.  It is one of my three games that have made it into the greatest collection of the world’s finest chess games.  I wrote about the database in a past newsletter, but the game I published that week was a draw.  This time I am publishing my only win in Chessbase.  The third game of mine in the database is a loss, and I’ll let you look that one up yourself.

This time is also the only time I had the “Great White” pieces.  It was published online a while back (http://colorado-chess.com/archiveEvents/Win_Sprgs_99/text/andersonkass.shtml) with much adoration.  However, I believe that if you don’t make an effort to “Save Your Love” it could disappear before you know it.  So, here is my version of the world famous game between Michael Kass and myself that taught me to “Never Change Heart.”

In our first meeting, I was the lower rated player but close enough to feel like I was “Gonna Getcha.”  I started out with an intensity that put me “On The Edge” of victory with a Fritz score of +6.50.

However, as I relaxed with a sure win in hand, I missed the “Lady Red Light” flashing her warning sign about the one square that would lead to perpetual check.  It was “All Over Now” as I realized my mistake when I took my hand away from the king.

It was a painful lesson from Michael the “Mistreater” Kass, who kept up his intensity the entire game and continued to fight like a caged animal.

The rematch came the next year, but my plans for revenge looked grim as I dropped a couple of pawns on the “Fast Road” to defeat.  But I was determined to return the favor from our previous encounter as I lunged from the board with gnashing teeth and screaming, “You will not ‘Rock Me’ this time!”

This Week In Chess

On May 8, the CSCC had 13 members in attendance.  The main event of the evening was a lecture by NM Josh Bloomer.  Josh set up several positions and talked about the key elements in king and rook endgames.  In addition, Joe Pahk asked to see some of the opening theory in the Caro-Kann, which gave Josh a chance to share one of my games as an example of what not to do.
