Game Of The Week
This week I am finally getting to the game I mentioned in the June 13th newsletter that I forgot to enter into Fritz. It is from Dean Brown who gave me the game back on the sixth of June, but was actually played on the seventh of May during the Wyoming Open. I think he was just then putting it into his computer so he was a month behind as well.
But there were a couple of things that happened to me this week that makes this game seem rather timely. First, I received the wonderfully written and excellently edited Colorado Chess Informant.
One of the first articles I looked at was the Brian Wall article, “The Day 1300’s Ruled The Earth.” Admittedly, I just read the jokes and didn’t look at the game, but I noticed the end of the article mentioned Dean and Lee’s game.
I thought, “Hey, I have that game and know exactly what Brian is referring to about Dean’s trapped queen.”
I wasn’t sure where Lee thought the escape square was as he could have been thinking of 2 squares his queen move covers (both of which were already covered by the knight).
However, I am sure most of the Informant readers were not aware of the game, and I didn’t see it anywhere else in the publication. So, that seemed a nice enough reason to publish the game now.
But the second thing was the clincher. I was playing chess at the Renaissance Festival this past Sunday when guess who shows up? It was Lee Lahti himself dressed as a peasant, and he has come to play brother Paul.
He was the only one to beat me that day, but in my defense, I was playing five people at the time. I usually play two boards with one person each, but it just happened that when Lee showed up I had talked a nice young lady and her two companions into a game, as long as they could all consult. Then Lee suckered me into thinking that I was going to be playing his son, who sat at the board and moved the pieces. But it was really Lee behind the curtain, fixing all the mistakes while I was distracted with the three-headed, chess-by-committee group on board one.
As I handed over the chain mail bracelet, I told him I would publish his loss as payback. He just cackled and ran off clutching his chain mail bracelet.

This Week In Chess

On June 27, the CSCC had 22 members in attendance. In the club-rated ladder games (G15), Bill Whinemiller (2.0-1.0) wasted one of his opportunities to complete the trifecta against Fred Eric Spell (1.0-2.0).
The rest of the participants paired up into teams with combined ratings less than 3400 for the Team tournament (4SS, G15). The higher rated partner is paired against the higher rated of the opponents, and the combined score of the team is used to make the pairings. The team of Virgil McGuire and Joe Pahk survived as the top team. Here are the results:
