Game Of The Week
It is one year ago today, since Al Ufer passed away. Last year, I asked people for games they played with Al, and I still had some left over. With nothing going on at the club this week, it seemed a fitting time to remember Al.
One of the people to respond was Jon Fortune. Here is the game and what he said last year:
"I enjoyed playing Allan very much. He was the terror of the Wyoming reserves. He also had taught a number of his children to play and I met and played his son Tom in a correspondence match. He was proud of the legacy of chess he passed on to his children. His draw with me enabled him to win the reserve section of the tournament in Casper in 2001."

This Week In Chess

On July 4, the CSCC had 0 members in attendance. In the USCF-rated ladder games (G90), nobody beat anybody. None of the participants played in the evening’s main event (G0). There were no results.

great email about Lee Lahti -I really laughed at the title -The Wrath of Brother Paul - Qc8 was to cover a square already covered - a6. He probably couldn't believe his luck that Brown's Queen was really trapped although one wonders if it would have helped - considering he handed over all his pieces next anyway -
what do 1300's see when they look at the board?
A- the wood finish
how many 1300's does it take to set a digital clock?
A- None, they're not allowed to touch them
[It is not often I disagree with a master, but I think it goes...how does a master set a chronos for delay? A- He asks a 1300. Right, Dean?]

I remember having to face the powerful Dean Brown and how much he taught me. Dean is always the epitome of concentration at the board and schooled me good in our first encounter. I remember how proud I was as a 1195 player at the Loveland Open beating him and taking 1st place in the U1610 section!! Always the most active player in Colorado (other than me), I remember countless road trips with Dean, Kathy, and Al up to Loveland and Craig. Dean always had a place on his floor for me during Colorado Springs tournament with the alarm clock dogs of his in the back yard barking at hot air balloons! Anyway, Dean is what good chess memories are all about.

PS - I seem to recall a day where 2 chess monks defeated all comers and then faced off against one another to break the streak..........I'll let the readers guess who won
