Game Of The Week
This week’s game comes from the Colorado Springs Open. I mentioned last week that Randy Canney had sent me two of his games from the tournament. So, I had to decide which one I was going to publish.
Randy was once a Senior Life Master (over 2400), which means that only .36% of the US chess playing population was better than or equal to him (Yes, that is a fraction of one percent!).
He is not as strong as he used to be, as the highest rating I could find in the USCF’s MSA was 2395 back in 1992. But since that is only .21% away from 2400, I guess we’ll take his word for it that he actually made it over the 2400 mark.
As I looked over his ratings history, I noticed he played in the TENTH (AND LAST) COLORADO CLOSED (CO) in 1996. I wasn’t playing chess back then so I don’t know what is the story behind the name, but Randy is going to be playing in the Colorado Closed again this year. One of his opponents in the Closed will be David Wallace, who just played Randy in the Colorado Springs Open.
Now, I haven’t met David Wallace, but from what I have seen of him, he reminds me of Darth Maul, if Darth Maul had worn a black cowboy hat. And with Randy being a Master, I thought I could create a little drama for the round 2 pairing of the Colorado Closed (3/25, 4pm) as it will be the sequel to the game I have chosen this week:

On March 7, the CSCC had 23 members in attendance. In the USCF-rated ladder games (G90), Cindy Langseth lambasted Kathy Schneider, Mike Filppu finished off Jerry Maier, Dan St. John St. jumped Richard Cordovano, and Josh Bloomer blasted Joe Fromme.
The rest of the participants joined the round robin blitz tournament (G5). Here are the results:

It's funny you mention how your forget about the king. I remember I encountered this first hand a long time ago when we played as a team in a non-consultation club chess tourney. Maybe if you keep writing enough of these, "where's the king?" e-mails about yourself, you'll find the reason you're not going up the chess ladder fast enough! :-) Thanks for always flattering me, by the way!
