Game Of The Week
The nice thing about the Colorado Springs Open is that you get to play a wide range of opponents. In my first round, I played against a 1200. In the second round, I played someone 1000 points higher.
Of course, as is my custom, I beat the people I was higher rated than and lost to the one I was lower rated than. I don’t feel bad about the outcome since the MacMillan-Fromme draw landed me in the prize money anyway.
Also, my only loss was to Randy Canney. I had never played him before, and he seemed to be having a good tournament. He finished in second only because he took a bye to spend time with his wife. Otherwise, I thought his games were some of the most interesting ones I saw.
In each of my other games, I had time to get away from the board and wander around the tournament hall. I found myself lured to Randy’s board to find out what piece he had sacrificed and how it had turned out for him. Even during my game with him, I was compelled to stay right in my seat and ponder some way out of the mess I had gotten myself into.
So, I think I spent more time during this tournament analyzing Randy’s games than I did my own. But it was worth it. I caught up with him just before a training run for the Pikes Peak Marathon. He calls himself a class E runner, but really enjoys it. As all the top runners passed him by, he realized there is more to chess and running than just finishing first.
I asked him how he liked his games, and if he wanted to share one with me. He said he has never used a chess program and would be interested to see what the computer said. I told him I have never played against the program I have or used its tutorials either, but I just use the analysis and publishing features. However, just that part has allowed me to meet interesting people I wouldn’t have talked to otherwise.

On March 14, the CSCC had 21 members in attendance. In the USCF-rated ladder games (G90), Richard Cordovano conquered Dan St. John and Joe Pahk pounded Jerry Maier. In a G60, Josh Bloomer outlasted Buck Buchanan.
The rest of the group was paired together for the King’s Gambit Thematic 2-game matches. Each participant played both sides of the King’s Gambit opening (1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4) against the same opponent (G30). Here are the results:
