Game Of The Week
This week’s game comes from Brian Wall. During the Josh Bloomer simultaneous, Brian played Tony Telinbacco in an USCF-rated game (G90). After putting Tony out of his misery, Brian came over to my board to make fun of my debacle.
He asked, “Are you going to publish that one?”
I responded, “Not if you have a better game.”
Of course, Brian always has a better game, and he is always willing to let me publish them. But I did end up publishing the Bloomer game only because I wanted to have a game in my stockpile database for a least a week.
Anyway, I am often surprised by the comments Fritz will add to a game. On move 29, Fritz recommend a different move saying it “is still a small chance” despite scoring the position +- 6.5. I guess Fritz’s programming includes a calculation of the possibility of Brian collapsing from a heart attack and offering a draw.

This Week In Chess

On May 2, the CSCC had 25 members in attendance. In the USCF-rated matches (G90), Tony Telinbacco took care of Dean Brown, Jerry Maier manhandled Dan Torba, and Mike Davis defeated Tom Mullikin.
The rest of the members were split into two groups for a double round robin speed tournament (G5). Josh Bloomer went undefeated in the first group, and I barely edged out Buck Buchanan for the top scorer in the second group thanks to the crafty old-timer, Virgil McGuire, who stole a game from Buck. Here are the results:

Question of the Week
In gratitude for giving me his game, I put the annotations on a different line. A couple weeks back, Brian had asked me if I could separate the main line in the email as he goes over the game in his head. I was quite impressed as I can barely solve mate-in-one problems without breaking out a board. But it made me think about how people study games. So, let me know your technique.
