Game Of The Week
This week at the Colorado Springs Chess Club, I talked with former expert, Dan Avery. He was very complimentary about the newsletter but thought I should publish my losses as well as my wins.
I didn’t have the heart to tell him that I have already published four of my losses (versus nine wins), but rather I just promised to publish my next recorded loss. I figured with the Pikes Peak Open this weekend that I would have several losses from which to choose.
Well, it didn’t quite work out like I had planned. I was one of three people in the tournament who did not lose a game. Brian Wall and Eric Billaux were the other two. They did not take a bye like I did so I finished a half point out of first.
Unlike Brian and Eric, not losing a game during a tournament is a rarity for me. I can count on one hand the times I made it through a 4 round (or more) Swiss tournament without a loss:

So, there I was, happy to have had a great tournament but unsure about what to publish in the newsletter. I thought that since Dan was so eager to have one of my losses published, he would be more than willing to give me his loss from the Pikes Peak Open.
Surprisingly enough, he was a true gentleman about my request and said, “You can have the score sheet I left at the table.” Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find all of the tiny pieces and put them back together.
So, I will have to give you the next best thing to one of my losses: a draw. This will be the first time I have published a draw, but this game has a lot going for it. It involved two of the three unbeaten people in the tournament, it kept Eric Billaux from winning the tournament outright, and it was the game for which I received the most compliments.
People seemed to like my 21…Nd3 22.h3 Nxb2 combo. Fritz had very little to say which I also take as a compliment. I usually have to set my blunder threshold pretty high to keep Fritz from criticizing every move I make.
So, take a look and see if you think there is any value in publishing a draw.

This Week In Chess

On 8/3, the CSCC had 28 members in attendance. In the USCF-rated (G90) games, Richard Cordovano beat Dean Brown, Andrew Chow took care of Allan Ufer, and Ruth Irons dispatched John McIntyre.
The rest of the group was split into 2 groups for the speed tournament (G5). In the top section, Josh Bloomer showed everyone who is boss, and Roy Roberts went undefeated in the lower section. Here is how the rest of the groups finished:

24 Hours Of Chess Hell

I like this 24 hrs of chess idea that the Dallas Chess Club does. I would call our event: DCC's 24 Hrs of CHESS HELL! CO chess fans and 1800-wanna-be's: Stay tuned, as this event will happen sometime in the next year! I'll consider giving people the option to only play 12-hrs for a 30% fee reduction in entry fee ("play an extra 12 hrs of chess for only 30% more!"). And like the Eagle's "Hotel California" song goes, we can enforce the rule "You can enter, but you can never leave"! Oh, and I almost forgot, those who play the entire 24 hrs should get something like a refrigerator magnet.
