Take The Money And Run

Game Of The Week

This weekend I went to the Southern Colorado Open at the beautiful Masonic Lodge in Mantiou Springs.  Not many people know this, but the Lodge is one of the few places that set its clocks ahead 50 minutes at daylight savings time instead of the traditional 60 minutes.  It is called Masonic Savings Time and is why all the rounds started 10 minutes late.

Anyway, I was trying to steal some games from people to put on the newsletter, but I was caught by Richard Herbst, so I had to ask Allan Ufer for his 1st round upset of the top seeded reserve player.  After 1 game, he had $35!  I told him, “It doesn’t get better than that, you should…

This Week In Chess

Tuesday June 15, 2004

On 6/8, the CSCC had 22 members in attendance.  In the USCF-rated matches (G90), Andy Chow again outlasted Richard Cordovano while Dan Southard pummeled Allan Ufer.  The rest of the members played in the Eccentric Pairing Swiss Tournament.  The goal of the tournament is to be the player with the highest rating gain.  Instead of using the normal pairing system, Buck will match players based on unusual criteria that happen to float through his mind at the time he is making the pairings.  Round 1 was paired by players wearing white shoes as white against players wearing dark shoes as black.  In round 2, the colored pants took on those wearing jeans or shorts.  In the third round, the people with the lowest rating gain chose their opponent.  In the final round, the players were paired in order of the rating gain.  After all the madness, Devin Smith finished on top with +33 rating’s gain:
