Game Of The Week
This week I have gone back to publishing a game that I don’t have stored in any of my databases yet. This is my third and final simultaneous I played in against someone who is master strength or above.
I have played in a couple of simultaneous exhibitions against experts but I didn’t save the score sheets. I am sure I won, but since I can’t prove it or even actually remember the results, it is just an interesting part of the Anderson chess myth.
However, this game is real and very believable as I lost to Colorado Master, Paul Nikitovich. He took white on all boards, and I think he won all the games that evening. The field was not very strong so my game was one of the last ones to finish. I kept to my usual tradition of not taking any passes. As more and more players were knocked out, I had to make quicker and quicker decisions until finally I dropped my rook and dropped out.

This Week In Chess

On 4/6, the CSCC had 22 members attend the evening’s program. The primary function was a speed tournament (G/5). The group was split into 2 sections with Brian Wall winning the top section and Sam Meyer winning the bottom section. In addition, Allan Ufer came from behind to topple Andrew Chow in an USCF-rated G/90. Here is how the speed tournament finished:

The secondary function was a birthday celebration for club member, Renae Delaware. Brian Wall brought 2 cakes with chess decorations. He said, “Anyone coming to the Colorado Springs Chess Club tonight can sample Isaac and Tara's chess cake with 25 candles. The cake has squares like a chessboard and has Renae's name with chess pieces drawn on it. The club might want to bronze the cake instead of eating it.” However, when I arrived, the group had already sung “Happy Birthday” and the cake’s chess pieces were so badly destroyed that they resembled a final position from one of Glenn Miller’s blitz games. But Renae was nice enough to request an encore of the song for me. I asked her how old she was and she said, “25 with a 5 second delay!” So, I asked her if she liked having the delay and she replied, “I prefer to avoid sudden death!”
Chess Collectable in Colorado Springs
On 4/5, Paul Grimm, CSCA Treasurer, informed me that some rare Colorado Chess Informants were accidentally released into circulation in Colorado Springs on 4/3. Due to an error in the magazine that was caught before the general mailing, a limited number of unique Informants were handed out, possibly increasing their value anywhere from 3 to 5 times the cover price. Paul Grimm is trying to locate people who received the rare copy. If you have a rare copy, you can tell because “there's one revision in the upcoming events which got overlooked…(THE DENVER OPEN IS 2-4 JULY; NOT 25-27 JUN!)”
Thematic Event

Here is a little more information on the thematic event coming up in a few weeks. On the first night, we will be playing two "thematic" games. We will provide the starting position just before the game (Time control of G30) one game each opponent for a total of two games. The starting positions will not be lopsided but rather one where there is several possible plans to take for either side. Scorekeeping mandatory! The following week Brian Wall will lecture on those positions and I will collect the score sheets and compile (anonymously) the following several moves as played by everyone. What we hope to do is give some feedback on how people responded.
