Game Of The Week
This week I received a letter from some chess organization saying I was a possible candidate to teach some kids chess basics at a summer camp. I was quite surprised to hear that my chess playing skills had reached the ears of some national chess organization. As I read on, I realized that it was actually some mass mailing from a list that was not filtered based on ability or rating. The disclaimer said candidates had to be expert strength or above.
Well, I may not be an expert, but I have, on occasion, broken off the shackles of this class world and soared off into the heavens to touch the face of expert status.
At G15, I have won 8 games against USCF-rated experts. At G30, I have won 3 times, and at G90, I have won 2 times.
As impressive as my double-digit performance is on the surface, it turns out it was only against 3 different people. So, I figured it wouldn’t take me very long to thank those experts for allowing me, at least for a brief moment, to feel like I could teach chess to a bunch of novices. This week, I thank Dan Avery for one of my G90 wins!

This Week In Chess
Monday April 19, 2004
On 4/13, the CSCC had its version of the Civil War. In the gray camp were the cranky and tired old folks. In the blue camp were the obnoxious and hyperactive youths. It was called the Juniors vs. the Seniors. 16 members showed up for the event, and the group was split into 2 factions based on age. The starting lineup for the Seniors was Virgil McGuire, Allan Ufer, Jeff Fox, Shaun MacMillan, David Ward, Richard Cordovano, Mike Jozwiak, and Dean Brown. The starting lineup for the Juniors was Paul Anderson, Dan Southard, Robert Kohler, Inn Sohn, Renae Delaware, Chris McCarty, and Sam Meyer. The Seniors jumped out to an early lead with Richard Cordovano teaching a youngster to respect his elder. Also, Shaun MacMillan proved the Seniors had some life left by posting another victory. However, the younger generation proved to be too hard to tame and took home 6 wins with Sam Meyer earning 2 of the victories.
