Not A Viable Option!

Game Of The Week

by Paul Anderson

This weekend I played in the Schriever AFB command qualifier.  It was open to the public, but the top 3 military personnel will go on to play in the Major Command Championship.  From there, the winners go on to the USAF Championship, the US Interservice Championship, and finally, the NATO Championship.

Last year, two people from Shriever went all the way to NATO.  One of those two was Nathaniel Ola, who I played this year.  Had I won the game, I could have finished in first. But, that was not a viable option for me as I was not playing well as black.  I had winning chances early on and drawing lines later, but I was able to find much weaker moves both times.  I should have lost 2 games as black, but I got lucky against Richard Cordovano and held on for the draw.

Since Nathaniel went on to win his second straight Schriever title unbeaten, I thought I would share with you one of his games where he had to come from behind.  Here is hoping that I lost to the future NATO Champ!

This Week In Chess

Tuesday March 16, 2004

On Tuesday night, the CSCC offered a chess lecture by a local expert, Dan Avery.  Dan replayed and analyzed a game from the 21st International Chess Tournament in Linares, Spain between Peter Leko (2722) and Vladimir Kramnik (2777).  26 members viewed the lecture and played pick-up games.  On Saturday, Senior Chess Master, Robert M Snyder was in the Springs to teach a chess camp at the International Academy School.  Also this weekend, the Schriever Air Force Base held its championship (5SS, G/90).  It was open to the public as long as you could get through security.  A couple of Schriever’s own finished 1st and 3rd with myself coming in 2nd (surprisingly enough).  Here are the results:
