Game Of The Week

I spent this weekend playing chess in the Colorado Springs Open. Since the tournament just ended hours ago, I haven’t received any games from other players. But I talked to a couple of folks who said they had some nice games and would send them to me. Josh Bloomer went undefeated and finished in 1st place. He said he might send me a game, so be sure to check back for that exciting possibility.
In the meantime, I picked out one of my games to publish. It was not my best game, but I used a queen sacrifice to try and hang on after a serious mental lapse. And it worked! I don’t usually go in for sacrificing since I am just not very good at it, and I can’t remember ever intentionally giving up my queen for anything less than a queen.
So, this game is a rarity for me. Of course, in all fairness to my opponent, Tom Corbett, I should mention that he was under tremendous time pressure after move 20. By move 40, he hit his clock with 1 second left.
Also, we were using my Saitek chess clock, which Tom took around the building, at the start of the game, desperately trying to find some who could set it for delay. Unfortunately, the clock doesn’t even have this option.
Well, the Fritz analysis is done, and the only thing I can think to add myself is that I definitely felt that double question mark during the game. My face got bright red and I felt crushed. Check it out and see if it makes you feel the same way:

This Week In Chess

On Tuesday night, the CSCC met for the first time under the new dues structure, and everything seemed to go smoothly. The officers’ estimate for average attendance was right on the nose this night with 25 people signing the register. Most of the group played in the speed tournament with myself (surprisingly enough) finishing first. Here is how the top 5 finished:

In the ladder games, Dan Southard toppled Richard Cordovano, Ray Lyons shot down Al Ufer, and Robert Kohler took 2 from Andy Chow. Also this night, the club awarded 2 free entries to the Colorado Springs Open (3/6-3/7) for the highest club rated (Brian Wall) and the most active (Renae Delaware). Renae was able to parlay her free entry into some money by tying for the U1300 prize with Frank Shotwell and Fred Spell.
