Dreams And Fantasies

Game Of The Week

This week's game comes from the Denny's Quick event (G/24;d/5, 4SS) this past Friday.  It is similar to the IHOP Quick Earle Wikle runs except with less Country music.  I was late but managed to climb up to board one by the final round where I faced an old nemesis, DuWayne Langseth.

I had to win to get a share of first and any prize money.  So, I opted to allow DuWayne to have some counter-play instead of trading off Rooks and going into a very drawish endgame.  I came up with a plan to let him invade and pick up some Pawns while I snuck my King up the board so I could Mate or Promote a Pawn.

It was not a good plan.  It was more of a fantasy.

They are like a dream when one awakes;
when you arise, Lord,
you will despise them as fantasies.

Psalm 73:20

I believe in following one's dreams.  However, dreams involve a good plan and hard work.  A lot of people confuse fantasies with dreams.  Fantasies are those impulsive ideas that lack thought and preparation.

It is like trying to hit the lottery on April 14th to pay your taxes.  Of course, sometimes you get lucky and the taxman never comes.

DuWayne had this position and found the right move but failed to collect the win and his hard earned money.  Instead, Bernie Sanders confiscated his prize and split it among the masses in fantasyland.

This Week In Chess

On March 29th, the Colorado Springs Chess Club held a lecture by club officer, Brian Rountree.  He spoke about the Evans Gambit and went over several games, including the 1st one from 1825.  After the lecture, 4 players joined the Thematic Round Robin (G/10, RR) and played 3 games from the Compromise Defense.
