Friday The 13th
Friday, February 13th, 2015
I am back for another season of chess news and games. Last year, I set my record for peak rating (USCF 2098), and earlier this year, I was certified as a Club Tournament Director. This means that I don't have to beg players for their games. The TD can publish any game from an event he directs. So, less of my games!
I also added some new chess clips to the Colorado Springs Chess News' Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/cschessnews
One of those videos appears in the horror film, "Friday The 13th, Part II." Of course, the only person to survive the massacre is the chess player.
Hope you enjoy them!
Game Of The Week
This week's game comes from my famous battle with Brian "Williams" Rountree. The battle occured when Garry Kasparov split from FIDE, around the time of the first Iraq war. It was about 10 years before the famous helicopter attack in 2003, where Brian and I survived another amazing battle.
The first time, our battle played out over the chess board. We were the top 2 chess news reporters in the US at that time and the only ones who could play chess at Garry Kasparov's press conference, when he announced his newly formed Professional Chess Association. Since the Fischer Boom had died out, Brian and I were selected to battle for the right to take on the World Chess Champion for his title and hopefully restart the American chess craze again with the "Anderson Boom."
We were to play a one-game, winner-take-all match. I had a couple things in my favor. The time control was fast at G30, and I got white. Brian was eager to test out the new delay of 10 seconds, which was double the old delay. However, it failed to help.
We got to this position when I told Brian to resign.
