Game Of The Week

This week's game comes from my list of upsets.  I have knocked off 53 chess players in USCF-rated tournaments who were within 25 rating points of myself or higher.

This time, the upset was over Isaac Martinez.  Isaac is the 97th highest rated 16 year old in the US and is the iron man of ratings gain.  He started at a low of 100 and plodded along day in and day out to his peak of 2027.

In addition, he has served as a chess-playing monk at the Colorado Renaissance Festival, which means that he is one of a handful of people on this planet who can play two boards at one time and win close to 100% of over 40 games in a day amid a caravan of minstrels and wild beasts passing in front of him.

Typically, I have been higher rated than Isaac.  So, my wins against him did not qualify as upsets.  However, at the end of last year, Isaac was electric, racking up wins and putting himself over the expert level for the first time.  I was at a funeral, mourning the loss of my expert status and enduring the abuse of that salad-eating rat, Tim Brennan.  So when our war resumed at the November Panera's Wednesday tournament, Isaac's rating had piggy-backed over me.

I was able to jump out to a lead in the opening.  However, Isaac wins a lot of games by shear force of will.  He keeps attacking and finds innovative tactics to swing a game around in just a couple of moves.

I was becoming paranoid that Isaac was just toying with me.  Around every move I feared the cold hand of tactical doom.  Did Isaac have some magical power to summon blunder fairies to lull my pieces into a lack of development?  Where could I find the strength to give these delusions the boot?

2014 Colorado Springs Open

67 players matched their skill in this year’s Colorado Springs Open.  Despite threatening weather the days before, when the weekend came all was well.  The City Hall was still not ready for us, so we again moved to Venue 515 of the Manitou Art Center across the street.  This time the room was nice and warm, the lights stayed on (well, most of the time), we were entertained Sunday morning by First Nations drumming and singing from their office above the lobby (at a reasonable volume, when we kept the doors closed) and my computer only failed to function part of the time.  So altogether, it was a great weekend of chess.

We had a good strong tournament, with tough competition for the top prizes.  Some new faces were there, among them a contingent from the Air Force Academy, German master Philipp Lamby by way of Texas, and two players who came separately from my original home town of Cincinnati – not to mention another Ohio refugee, Earl Wikle, who I played forty years ago in the Dayton Chess Club and is now active in Colorado Springs chess.

It’s always a concern of mine in big turnout events that we might have two players with perfect 5-0 scores – it’s never happened, but it just isn’t neat, you know.  And true to form, this year three players outpaced the pack with 4.5 points out of 5:  Brian Wall, Chris Peterson, and Jackson Chen.  They won the most bread, along with DuWayne Langseth (1953), whose 4 points took the U2100 prize away from the experts.
