Game Of The Week
This week’s game comes from the Pikes Peak Open. It was my seventh USCF-rated game against LM Brian Wall since we first faced each other seven years ago in the Northwest Colorado Open and the only one I could count as a “Triumph.”
Usually, I am “Spellbound” by the stature and awe-inspiring presence of the master, but this time I had my mp3 player fully charged so I could “Rock Out, Roll On,” tune out any distractions, and just play the board.
Unfortunately, it was nearly impossible to tune out the sweltering heat and “Cool Down” enough to sit for any length of time. I was very unsure of myself as to what I could try to make the seventh time a different story, but I figured you have to “Follow Your Heart” and stay true to yourself.
So, I went with my most comfortable opening. You can’t show any fear when playing a master, even when a lot of “Time Goes By” and he still hasn’t made his first move. Brian has a huge arsenal of weapons to attack you with and he always wants to choose the one that frightens you the most.
He plays chess like it is poker. He tries to read your eyes. He tries to find your tells. And he has this annoying habit of playing with the captured pieces like they are his poker chips.

So, I just pretended it was all a “Midsummer’s Daydream,” and the game went so fast it was as if I had been shot out of a “Time Canon.”
When Brian offered the draw, I didn’t stand around “Killing Time,” I took it and never looked back. I was a “Stranger In A Strange Land” as we looked over a game of ours where I hadn’t lost, and I think Brian had “Little Boy Blues” when he realized he fell only a half game short of Andy Rea in the best record against me in our first seven USCF-rated games contest.
In my ten years, less than a dozen people have played me seven times or more.
