Game Of The Week
This week’s game was sort of a last minute decision, as I was hoping to have one game from the Shaun MacMillan lecture. However, as the deadline approached, I realized he might not get the game to me on time. I guess I should have expected this possibility after seeing how well Shaun did with his Power Point presentation at the club earlier this week.
This was the first time someone was going to be doing a lecture with something other than a demonstration board, where all the pieces are moved by hand. In those lectures, approximately 45% of the time is spent trying to figure out which piece was put in the wrong slot.
Therefore, the club was excited to see how the new technology would avoid these kinds of delays. In addition, this lecture was going to be run by Shaun MacMillan, a chess player who has proven to have the desire, diligence, and training to make a goal and see it through to its completion. Of course, after Buck introduced Shaun to the club, we began to get the feeling something had gone awry.
Buck announced, “We have a special treat tonight as the current club champion, Shaun MacMillan, is going to do the first chess lecture at the club on Power Point tonight. Shaun are you ready?”
Shaun muttered, “What? Me? Uhh…sure.”
As Shaun moved to the center of the room, he began his lecture, “Ok, thanks for coming out tonight. Um…well…er…oh, yes, I know. I thought I would begin my chess lecture with a little demonstration on how to set up a Power Point presentation. First, you have to find an outlet to plug the computer into.”
Five minutes pass.
Shaun continued, “Ok, there we go. Second, we will want to turn the computer on. This could take a couple of minutes to load up.”
Five more minutes pass.
Shaun resumed, “Thirdly, we’ll need to find the start button and click there. Now we can locate Power Point and press run. It shouldn’t be long now. Oh, wait a minute, I just have to register first.”
Five more minutes pass as Shaun keys in the registration information.
Shaun started again, “Ok, now we’re ready.” As Power Point begins, a reminder window pops up.
Shaun read aloud, “New updates are available. Would you like to upload them now?” Well, huh…I guess we should get the updates. I’ll just press yes and…hmmm, well, it looks like this should just take about 12 more minutes.”
Buck interrupted, “Shaun this is the first time you have opened Power Point? You forgot about your lecture, didn’t you?”
Shaun defended himself, “In all honesty, I doubt I would have gotten this done even if I had remembered.”
So, I picked the shortest upset of mine I could find, and Fritzed it early this morning. It may not be in a Power Point presentation, but you probably don’t have that much time to spend on this email anyway.

This Week In Chess
On May 20th, the CSCC had 12 members in attendance. The evening’s activity was a lecture from the 2007 club champion, Shaun MacMillan. He did a power point presentation about his process for winning the club championship on the 25th anniversary of his last (and only) title.
He now holds the record for longest time between championships, taking the record away from Buck Buchanan, who had set the record at 11 years in 2003. His lecture was titled “How? Did Shaun! Win?!” and covered his march through a field of 6 former champions with 4 upset victories to post his personal best performance rating of 2600.
