Game Of The Week
Despite all the exciting new activities going on at the club, one chess game was played. It was a grudge match between two long-standing enemies, Gary Frenzel and Jeff Fox.
It is no secret that these two have been hostile to each other ever since the time when Gary showed up for chess club at 8:01pm, and Jeff refused to let him in the building.
But Gary would not be denied his revenge over the board. He was like a man possessed, playing move after move well above his rating.
Of course, Jeff wasn’t himself either, as he found himself with a winning position staring himself in the face with virtually no time off his clock. But even without the time pressure, would Jeff be able to find the answer to Gary’s puzzling 36th move?

This Week In Chess & Puzzles
On March 25th, the CSCC&P had 10 members in attendance. In an effort to improve attendance to the chess club, a variety of activities were offered in addition to chess, including music, exercises, and jigsaw puzzles.
Buck Buchanan entertained the members with some operatic singing he learned while a Hall Of Fame defensive tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1963-1975. He, and the other linemen, used to perform inspirational songs for elderly shut-ins during the off-season.
Renae Delaware provided the accompaniment on the accordion as they attempted a rendition of the inspirational classic from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Carousel. However, Renae accidentally purchased a parody, polka version of the sheet music, and they ended up performing “You’ll Never Walk Again.”
After the music, Dean Brown offered to read the group an article he wrote for the ASPCC. Dean had gotten involved with the group back in his political activism days of the 70s when he volunteered for some makeup and shampoo experiments large corporations were performing exclusively on chess players. The chemicals had the unfortunate side effect of slowly turning your hair white and retarding the growth of facial hair, which prompted Dean to devote his life to the prevention this kind of cruelty to chess players.
Dean began to read, “As a 34 year member of the ASPCC, 2000 Club co-champion (?!), and Memorial Tournament Secretary, I’ve been asked to introduce myself to the club,” before everyone decided it was too boring to continue.
At this point, I decided to offer my services to the group as a personal trainer, similar to Bob from the Big Fat Loser TV show, for some stretching and calisthenics in the adjoining room. I promised any takers to do for them what my regiment of ping-pong and chess has done for my physique. There were no takers.
However, Virgil McGuire opted for the Swedish spa treatment, as he cranked up the heat to a comfortable sauna temperature of 103 degrees and relaxed in the whirlpool.

COLORADO SPRINGS CHESS CLUB
April - June 2008
The Colorado Springs Chess Club meets Tuesday evenings in the downstairs Game Room of the Acacia Apartments Building at 104 E. Platte, just north of Acacia Park. The playing site opens about 6:30 PM. Most activities begin registration about 7:00, with play starting at 8:00. On most evenings, club ladder games are also available, including USCF-rated G/90 games. For more information call Buck at 685-1984 or e-mail buckpeace@pcisys.net .
Players should arrive no later than 8:00 to get into the building.
Please note: In addition to Tuesday evenings, club members are gathering for chess at these times:
