Game Of The Week
This week’s game comes from the club’s Swiss tournament played this past Tuesday. I was paired against Dean Brown in the first round. Dean was happy to play me as he just rocketed his way into the 4th spot on my chess enemies list at the beginning of this year.
At the end of every year, I go through my chess database and update a list of my top ten chess enemies and chess benefactors. Those are the chess opponents who have taken the most net rating points from me and who have given the most net rating points to me.
I originally came up with the “list of enemies” idea back in January of 2005 when I was interviewed by Paul Grimm for the Colorado Chess Informant. He asked, “Do you have an archrival?”
Without an actual archrival, I though it would be humorous to combine Richard Nixon’s list of enemies with my obsession for statistics and create my “10 Most Wanted” list. I guess other people enjoyed it as well, as I still get comments about it today.
In fact, at the start of our game, Dean says to me, “Let’s see if I can improve my spot on your enemies list.” He did not.
However, he has figured out a way to keep his spot. Several people have attempted to lock in their spot on my list by moving away or quitting chess, but they can always be passed by some up-and-comer who has my number.
Dean has taken a different approach. After making the list, he has stopped updating the ratings for the club. Now the main source of rating change has come to a grinding halt. My opponents will have to wait for the few USCF-rated opportunities to overtake Dean on the list.
Of course, I could always throw my next game against Dean to unclog the ratings pipeline, but I just couldn’t do it this game. It is not often I find the opportunity to sacrifice a piece for the knockout blow!

On May 29, the CSCC had 19 members in attendance. In the USCF-rated ladder game (G90), Joe Pahk played to a draw against Anthea Carson.
