Waving Your Bladder All Over The Place

Game Of The Week

Last week’s game was my loss to Markus Petters in the Mountain States Chess Club Match.  I had given the Yahoo! Group the choice of which game from the match they wanted published.  I think the Ft. Collins representatives all voted for that game, as it was one of their only two wins that day.

However, this week, I narrowed the field of choices to vote getters who weren’t chosen last week.  This time, Josh Divine - Dean Mitchell got the most votes.  They played 3rd board in the match and were the first board that had a decisive winner as Josh won both games.

Colorado Springs won on 4 of the 8 boards (Joe Pahk, Mike Filppu, and Jerry Maier as well) and drew on the rest.  So, those guys really deserve most of the credit for the victory.

However, as first board, I claimed the right to have my day with the cup…er, trophy before anyone else. I first showed it to my wife, son, and my brother-in-law’s family who had spent the day at the Tabor Center waiting for me to finish.  They reacted in unison, “Whatever, can we see the ESPN Zone now?”

Next, I had the trophy photographed so I could put it on the website.  I had hoped to have some inspiring championship music playing as I hoisted the trophy over my head and carried it into the club. However, I couldn’t remember the name of that band that took the name of a chess piece.  I often find my memory fails me when it comes to music groups or lyrics of songs.

I recently learned that misheard lyrics are referred to as mondegreens.  For example, my son and I both thought the Beatles were singing, “Blah, blah, blah…” at the beginning of All You Need Is Love.  Of course, there are more famous mondegreens than that.  Even the band that took the name of a chess piece has a well known one.

This Week In Chess

Tuesday April 3, 2007

On March 27, the CSCC had 14 members in attendance.  In the USCF-rated ladder game (G90), Josh Bloomer blasted Bill Whinemiller and Dean Brown broke down Tom Mullikin.

The rest of the participants played club-rated ladder games (G15).  Each player faced an opponent similar in rating in a 2 game match and then chose other willing opponents for additional matches.  Here are the results:

Player Win Loss %

Jeff Fox 6.0 0.0 100.00%
Paul Christensen 2.0 1.0 66.67%
Fred Eric Spell 3.0 3.0 50.00%
Paul Anderson 2.0 2.0 50.00%
Bob Edgar 2.0 4.0 33.33%
Jerry Maier 2.0 5.0 28.57%
