Game Of The Week
This week’s game comes from the Springs Polgar/Denker Fundraiser. The main purpose of this event is to raise some money to help this year’s state scholastic champions (Tyler Hughes and Kaila Smith) travel to the Denker and Polgar tournaments in August.
The event raised $235 from entry fees and donations. I always seem to play against the intended recipient in these events, which makes it tough to go for the win as you may knock the person you are raising funds for out of some additional money.
Well, this year was no different. The field was a little bottom heavy rating-wise with only 3 players being rated over 1800. I was one of the 3 along with Dan Avery and Tyler Hughes, and I played on board 3 all day until the 3rd round where I finally moved up to face a higher rated opponent, Tyler Hughes.
He got behind in time and dropped a knight. I had considered offering a draw when he got in time pressure, but I didn’t think he would accept it, as he seemed intent on winning at all costs. Plus, the last time we played (the 2005 fundraiser), the game was close, and he was in time pressure again but hung on to win it.
So, when it did finally end in a draw, I was pretty happy. I had improved on my last result against him, I was able to refocus after blundering away my lead in the game, and I hadn’t knocked him out of the prize money. The icing on the cake was that with the draw and Dan Avery’s loss on board 2 that round, I got a fortuitous pairing for round 4.
In addition to how well the tournament worked out for me, the game was interesting to me because it was eerily similar to my win against NM Josh Bloomer earlier this year (https://cschessnews.blogspot.com/2006/03/gimme-three-points.html). I searched my Fritz database for positions after 9. Bb5+, and out of almost 400 games, I have reached that position twice, one win and one draw against 2150+ opponents.
It was as if I had stumbled across a weapon that fit me like a stone in the hand of David:
