Game Of The Week
One of my favorite chess players is Buck Buchanan. He has been running the chess club since I have been coming (with help), he directs the main tournaments I play in (Colorado Springs Open, Pikes Peak Open, and Winter Springs Open), and he got me involved in promoting chess (Renaissance Festival and Territory Days). He is also one of the top three most common opponents I have faced in rated play behind Jeff Fox (41 times) and Virgil McGuire (39 times).
Therefore, he has had a big influence on my chess playing. More than anyone he varies his openings against me, some of which I have incorporated into my game (Four Pawns Attack). I think this may have come from my early success against him.
In our first 3 rated games, I was even with him with 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 draw. After 10 games, I had fallen behind but still had 2 wins and 3 draws. But then, he got creative.
He threw one curveball after another at me. I just kept swinging harder and harder with no success for 2 years (’01-’02). Finally, I have gotten back to winning some by learning to be still and coming up with some kind of a plan. This year we have split our 4 games together (2 wins, 2 losses).
This last one was our 33rd game together and something I have never seen Buck play. I have played against the Benko as white, but now I was on the black side. I felt at a loss early on, and it just kept getting worse as the game went on. But I remembered a quote from the last Colorado Chess Informant:

This Week In Chess

On May 30, the CSCC had 23 members in attendance. In the USCF-rated ladder games (G90), Joe Pahk punished Jerry Maier and Fred Eric Spell easily slaughtered Tom Mullikin. The shortened USCF-rated ladder games featured Joe Fromme fracturing Gerry Sunderland and Paul Anderson annihilating Buck Buchanan.
The rest of the participants played club-rated ladder games (G15). Each player faced an opponent similar in rating in a 2 game match and then chose other willing opponents for additional matches. Here are the results:
