Game Of The Week
When I heard the news about Al, I asked several people if they had a nice game of his I could publish. I think it says a lot about Al that I was overwhelmed with submissions.
So, I want to thank everyone who responded so quickly with your games, comments, and memories. I will publish more in the weeks to come. Here is a sample from the emails I received:
Dean Brown, “I was filing my life time collection of scoresheets a couple of weeks ago and believe Al got me 4 out of 11 games!”
Tom Mullikin, “In going through my games with Alan, I found I had 15 games with him. We split 7-7-1.”
Paul Grimm, “…allan ufer kicked the crap out of me 3 times too many (in about 14 encounters). when i go home, i'll e-mail you one of those games. in all loses, i started off the game with the cocky attitude "hey i'm playing allan ufer; i don't need no stinkin' time-delay clock . . . " well, you can guess i got what i deserved!! :-) like everyone else, i'll miss allan. i interviewed him on memorial day; maybe it will show up in a future informant (oct issue).”
Jon Fortune, “I enjoyed playing Allan very much. He was the terror of the Wyoming reserves. He also had taught a number of his children to play and I met and played his son Tom in a correspondence match. He was proud of the legacy of chess he passed on to his children. His draw with me enabled him to win the reserve section of the tournament in Casper in 2001.”
La Moyne Splichal, “It is sad to hear of Al Ufer passing away. He was also a Denver Chess Club member, taking advantage of our weekend tournaments, and making the trip to our annual club championship. --- On a personal note, I was always excited to play against him, he would throw some wild defences, and his attacks seemed he played on a highwire! Also, if he could've made the Denver Open during 4th of July weekend, no doubt Al would be fitted in his usual red-white-and blue outfit. Thanks Al for your colorful games & personality for colorful Colorado chessplayers."
Randy Reynolds, “Alan was the first person I played when I got back into tournament chess (2001). I also well remember him because he was one of the few people who made it to every Larimer County Open chess tournament I’ve ever held, a claim that can only be made by 4 or 5 players. He did some great things over the chess board in the last Larimer County Open, as attested to by this game against Wyoming player Roger Anderson. Alan grabs a one pawn lead at move 13, takes another one at 19, and then uses his pawns and space advantage to force Roger into a big loss at move 35. It may not have any spectacular piece sacrifices, but it shows the dedicated and straightforward chess style that Alan was known for. Consider using this as a commemorative game. I will miss him greatly."

This Week In Chess
Tuesday July 19, 2005
On July 12, the CSCC had 17 members in attendance. In the USCF-rated games (G90), Tony Telinbacco took home the win from Mike Davis, and Richard Cordovano controlled the proceedings against Tom Rosado.
The rest of the group played in four-round, Swiss tournament (G15). The veteran, Imre Barlay, came away without a scratch as the clear winner. Here are the final results:

It is with sadness that I must pass along the news that long time New Jersey and Colorado chess player and good friend to many, Al Ufer, has passed away after a lengthy bout with diabetes. I will relay details of any local services that may be held as I become aware of them. A Life Member of the USCF, Al finished his last tournament game at the Colorado Springs Open with a WIN.

I think it was Paul Grimm who asked for a photo of Al Ufer: “and you (or anybody) got digital pictures that can be published?” Well, I had one from the Northwest Colorado Open (with the usual suspects). So, I just scanned it and put it in my Photos section on the web page so that anyone can use it. But if you have any more photos, I can forward them along to Paul. He is brimming with ideas to remember Al: “maybe sometime in the future, a 1- or 2-day allan ufer memorial tournamanet can be done. the players on board 1 would have to play on allan's house of staunton chess set he won at a dcc denker fundraiser raffle some years back . . . “

Excellent chess comments, Paul. As a snowball in a coal bin, I wanted to say a word about chess. (See JAN 05 issue --Chess Informant) I read in the Jan 4 issue of NYTIMEs about the death of Arnold Denker, a chess champion of days gone by. Known as the Dean of American Chess (along with two others), he led the US to Four world team chess championships. Recently, I read his book, "The Bobby Fisher I Knew and Other Stories."
